Our first stop was in Juneau. We had booked a seaplane trip over the glaciers to a salmon bake but unfortunately it was cloudy and rainy so our trip was canceled. So we changed gears and spent a few hours exploring Juneau starting with Whale Point Park which is a small green area on the water with some statues.
We then wandered into town and stopped at the Red Dog Salon for lunch. It was such a scene with sawdust floors, scantily-clad waitresses and a very politically incorrect piano player. But it was warm, the adults got Duck Fart short, the kids thought it was hilarious and the salmon was fresh so we will call it a win!
We then took the tram to the top of Mount Roberts which overlooks the city. It provided some pretty views and the kids cooperated for a quick 1/2 mile hike.
We then made our way to our whale watching excursion. We made a quick stop at Mendenhall Glacier on the way before boarding our catamaran. We ended up seeing 6-7 whales and several sea lions. The boat and guides were great and it was cool to see the animals in their natural habitats.
We were all exhausted after the long day and while the kids rallied at the SeaPlex for a bit we all crashed hard. While not the day we had planned it was a successful time in Juneau.
