While Mom and Parker were off to the mountains of Colorado, Carter and Dad stayed home and had a "man's" weekend. Carter was up bright an early on Saturday and all he wanted to see was animals. So we headed to the zoo. We arrived a few minutes before the gates opened. This was a good thing as all the animals were very active as we walked around in the morning. The elephants were out stretching and showing their stuff.
We watched the Rhino for a while and then headed to the Giraffe Overlook for a better view of the zebras, giraffes and ostriches. As we continued our walk around the park, Carter stopped and watched all the birds fly around the aviary. I think he wanted to take them home, luckily the railing and fencing kept the birds safe!
As we made it to the Gorilla area, they were just being let out of their evening pens. They all scattered quickly with food in their hands (bananas, carrots, etc...). We even saw a new born clinging to his mom's back. Carter then found a statue of the Gorilla's and wanted to give the mom with a baby a hug (he might have missed his mom and baby!).
Then it was time to climb all over the statues
The wild dingo dogs were the only sleepy animals while we were there. No matter how much Carter pounded on the glass to wake them, they were not moving.
Our Zoo excursion was a hit, Carter was out like a light even before we made it to the freeway. After finishing his nap at home, it was off to our next adventure.
That afternoon we were off to the Virginia Highlands Summerfest. This is a big neighboorhood festival that has really grown in the past few years. This year they had a big children's area at a playground. Carter got his play on and also made his first craft for Mom, a small jewelry organizer with the help of some nice Home Depot employees.
Carter really had a blast at the playground though, mostly because they had a fire truck that he could drive (he has a small obsession with them right now).
Then it was time to get a snack and listen to some fun music. Carter really took to the concert and quickly asked to walk right up to the front of the stage to watch. He was mesmerized, it helped that the band was pretty decent and some other little ones were up front too.
Needless to say, after all that activity (and an hour swim before dinner) Carter slept like a champ. The next morning we were off to Carter's favorite restaurant for breakfast, Waffle House.
After getting our fill,, we were off to the Aquarium for more fun and adventure. Carter found a fun little nook that overlooked the shark/ray touch tank.
He has started to get much more independent and walking on his own. This is really helping save Mom and Dad's back, and so far his is very good to make sure he is in line of sight at all times.
It is amazing to see this little man run through exhibits where a year ago he could barely walk to and was lucky to see over the edge. Out little man is really growing up fast.
And by run, at times we do mean run!
On the way out Carter found a dolphin statue and would not walk away until he had his picture taken on it.
After the Dolphin, we decided to walk around Pemberton Place (the park between the World of Coke and the Aquarium). While Dad walked, Carter ran after every bird he could find.
Luckily they were quicker than Carter, but he really gave it a good try.
After we got home and had lunch, Carter went down for a nap. He must have really been worn out from the weekends activities because 4 hours later, Dad had to wake Carter at 4:30pm out of a dead sleep so we would be ready for Mom and Parker when they came home.
It was a great weekend for both Holden men!
