October at School

Carter had a busy month at school.  He began his personal essay unit in Writing Workshop and has chosen our dog, Madie, as his subject.  In social studies they started learning about the 13 colonies which culminated in the class making videos about each of the 13 colonies.  In Reading Workshop, they are wording on nonfiction reading and reading through different lenses for this type of text.  Word Study focused on different spelling patterns like plural endings and suffixes.  Math worked on multiplication and division.

Carter has started bring his laptop home and loves doing his homework on it.  And my favorite activity of the month... his teacher focused on daily affirmations in morning meeting one day as a means to affirm positive self-talk. They played a game called Snowball where each child wrote a personalized affirmation on a slip of paper, crumbled it up, threw it into a pile into the center of the room, and grabbed a "snowball" from the pile.

Parker had a busy month with lots of learning and a little fun.  His Chinese unit included a cooking lesson on fried rice which Parker now loves.  He started his non-fiction writing unit and are working on non-fiction books in reading workshop as well.  Second grade had several author visits.  In math, they are working on various addition/subtraction techniques to give them various problem solving options.  And his class began learning cursive.

Avery continues to enjoy Kindergarten.  Her favorite activity this month was STEM day where the class worked in groups to make parachutes.  The fasted parachute got to me launched off a fire truck.  She is working hard on reading, site words and hand writing.
